Elon Musk has sparked fresh debate over billionaire philanthropy after criticising MacKenzie Scott’s charitable giving, saying the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ former wife’s $26 billion-plus donation campaign is “sadly” making the world a worse place.
The controversy began after a viral social media post highlighted Scott’s philanthropy, noting that she has donated more than $26.3 billion since 2019, making her one of the largest individual donors in history.
Responding to the post, an X user wrote: “Unfortunately, she’s spending it making the world a worse place.” Musk replied with a brief but pointed response: “Sadly, yes.”
The Tesla and SpaceX chief did not specify which organisations or causes he was referring to.
