The F1 penalty points system was introduced by the FIA in 2014, and it coincided with the beginning of the turbo-hybrid era.
However, the system had nothing to do with the turbo hybrids but was a result of what had happened in the early 2010s.
During that time, a new generation of drivers had made their way to the sport, who were quite crash-prone.
With an increased frequency of collisions and crashes between drivers, a system was needed to be put in place that was standard and hence helped keep drivers in check.
This led to the inception of the F1 penalty points system.
As a part of the system, a driver who commits an on-track transgression is handed penalty poinTS. These points depend on the type of transgressions, and once a driver reaches the 12-point threshold, they get banned.
With that being said, as we get ready after the F1 Belgian GP, how do the drivers stack up? Let’s take a look.
