The Tesla and SpaceX CEO’s swipe at the philanthropist’s giving model turned a viral X post into a larger fight over power.
One of the world’s richest men is attacking one of the fastest-moving philanthropists in America.
Elon Musk responded on X over the weekend to a post criticizing MacKenzie Scott’s charitable giving, agreeing with the claim that her donations are making the world “a worse place.”
Musk’s reply was only two words—“Sadly, yes”—and he did not specify which donations, organizations, or causes he was criticizing.
But the comment turned a viral X post into a larger debate over how billionaires should give away their fortunes, and how much control they should keep after the money leaves their hands.
Scott, the author and ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has donated more than $26 billion since 2019, according to Yield Giving, the philanthropic organization she founded.
Her network has made more than 2,700 gifts to nonprofits, many of them large, surprise donations with few or no restrictions on how the money can be used.
The model has made Scott one of the most closely watched donors in the country.
It has also made her a target for critics who argue that her giving is too political, fast, or detached from traditional oversight.
Scott’s giving reached a new peak in 2025, when she gave $7.1 billion to nonprofits, according to the Associated Press, bringing her total giving since 2019 to about $26.3 billion.
Her donations represented roughly a third of all U.S.
mega giving last year, according to Giving USA data reported by the AP.
The fight over control
Traditional large-scale philanthropy often comes with narrow grant requirements, reporting rules, and donor-driven priorities.
Scott has taken a different approach.
Yield Giving says its name reflects a belief in “adding value by giving up control.” The organization says it identifies nonprofits through research—and then gives them money to use as they see fit.
