Elon Musk celebrated his 55th birthday with more than just birthday wishes.
The world’s first trillionaire used the occasion to throw down a challenge to rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, announcing an aggressive roadmap for xAI’s future models.
Instead of releasing occasional updates, Musk says his AI company plans to launch a brand-new foundation model every month for the rest of the year.

Grok 4.5 Enters Testing As xAI Targets Anthropic
The announcement came through a post on X, where Musk said the releases would consist of completely new models trained from scratch rather than incremental updates or fine-tuned versions.
If the timeline holds, it would represent one of the fastest release schedules announced by any major AI company.
According to Musk, the first release in this roadmap is Grok 4.5, which has already entered private beta testing at Tesla and SpaceX.
The xAI chief said the model is built on a 1.5-trillion-parameter foundation model, internally referred to as v9, with additional supervised training data contributed by coding startup Cursor.
Musk claimed early internal evaluations place Grok 4.5 close to, or “perhaps exceeding,” Anthropic’s latest Claude Opus models.
At the same time, he tempered expectations by describing v9 as “a solid workhorse in the same league as Opus”, rather than a dramatic leap forward.
Musk also acknowledged that Grok’s current foundation model, v8, completed training last December and still contains what he described as “many fundamental flaws.” The new architecture is intended to address those shortcomings while significantly increasing model capacity.
The world’s first trillionaire also revealed that xAI has already begun training an even larger 2-trillion-parameter model, which is expected to finish training in late July before a wider rollout in August.
According to him, the accelerated release cycle has been made possible by engineers from Starlink and Starship, many of whom are now dedicating a substantial portion of their work to xAI.
He also said the Cursor team is helping improve the model through supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning.
The announcement comes as competition among AI companies continues to intensify.
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI are all racing to develop larger and more capable models, with faster release cycles increasingly becoming part of that battle.
