Lewis Hamilton’s Belgian Grand Prix weekend just took a massive, wall-scraping detour.
Right at the dying moments of Free Practice 3, the seven-time world champion lost control of his Ferrari, burying the rear end into the barriers and bringing an abrupt end to the final practice session at Spa-Francorchamps.
The incident couldn’t have come at a worse time for Scuderia Ferrari.
As the clock ticked down on FP3, Hamilton suffered a heavy snap, spinning the car backwards and ripping the right rear corner completely off against the tire wall.
A Race Against the Clock for Qualifying for Ferrari
While Hamilton was quick to confirm he was physically unharmed, the frustration was obvious over the team radio.
A heavily dejected Hamilton immediately apologized to his race engineer, stating: “I’ve destroyed the car, mate, I’m sorry.”
Footage from the track shows extensive, critical damage to the Ferrari’s rear wing and right rear suspension geometry.
The sheer force of the impact snapped the suspension arms completely, leaving the wheel tethered but heavily mangled as Hamilton was forced to park the destroyed chassis on the grass.
With qualifying just hours away, the mechanics in the Ferrari garage are now staring down an absolute nightmare of a rebuild.
Repairing a shattered rear suspension and replacing the entire rear wing structure within such a tight turnaround window is going to require a superhuman, all-hands-on-deck effort from the Maranello crew.
The crash is a bitter pill to swallow for the Tifosi, especially since Hamilton had been showing genuine flashes of pace throughout the weekend.
Following Friday’s running, Hamilton was highly optimistic about the car’s setup, noting that the team had made positive steps forward.
Before the shunt brought the on-track action to a premature halt, Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli had topped the turbulent FP3 session, leaving Ferrari with plenty of data to analyze while they frantically turn wrenches.
Now, all eyes are on the Ferrari garage.
If they can’t piece the car back together in time for Q1, Hamilton will be staring down a brutal pit-lane start for Sunday’s Grand Prix.
