Lewis Hamilton offered a calm but unmistakably confident response after his hard-fought on-track duel with Max Verstappen during an action-packed Austrian Grand Prix, dismissing suggestions that he had driven unfairly despite the Red Bull driver’s complaints over team radio.
Their battle became one of the highlights of the race, featuring two intense wheel-to-wheel exchanges that showcased the experience and determination of two Formula One champions.
Verstappen believed Hamilton had pushed him beyond the edge of the circuit during their first confrontation and immediately urged his team to report the incident to race control.
However, after reviewing the footage, the stewards concluded that no sporting regulations had been broken, allowing Hamilton to escape without a penalty.
As they approached one of the circuit’s key overtaking zones, Verstappen attempted to drive around the outside of Hamilton.
The Ferrari driver held the inside line, forcing the Dutchman wider as they reached the corner exit.
Verstappen ran beyond the track limits and immediately argued over team radio that he had been squeezed off the circuit.
Race control quickly noted the incident, raising the possibility that Hamilton could face an investigation for allegedly forcing another driver off the track.
The review, however, lasted only a short time before officials confirmed that no further action would be taken.
Following the race, Hamilton explained why he believed his defensive move was entirely within the rules.
“He tried to go around the outside,” Hamilton said.
“When you’re racing another world champion, you don’t really expect to make that move work from that position.”
The seven-time world champion argued that Verstappen had not established sufficient overlap before reaching the apex of the corner.
“At the apex he was still behind,” Hamilton continued.
“From my perspective, that meant he needed to back out of the move.
I still left enough room, but ultimately he chose to stay there.”
Hamilton’s comments reflected the confidence of a veteran driver who has spent nearly two decades competing against Formula One’s very best.
While acknowledging the intensity of the battle, he made it clear that he believed the stewards reached the correct decision.
Although Hamilton successfully defended his position during their opening duel, the balance of power shifted later in the race.
After the pit-stop sequence, Verstappen gradually closed the gap once again.
This time the Red Bull demonstrated stronger race pace, allowing the reigning world champion to complete the overtake without prolonged resistance before steadily pulling away.
Verstappen ultimately crossed the finish line in second place after another impressive recovery drive, finishing just behind race winner George Russell.
Hamilton, meanwhile, struggled during the closing stages as Ferrari committed to a three-stop strategy that failed to deliver the desired result.
The Briton eventually finished fifth, more than 26 seconds behind Russell at the checkered flag.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Hamilton remained realistic when evaluating Ferrari’s overall performance.
Speaking after the race, he admitted that the Italian team simply did not possess the speed required to challenge Mercedes and Red Bull throughout the weekend.
“It was a really difficult race,” Hamilton acknowledged.
He explained that the problems began almost immediately after the lights went out.
A poor launch off the starting grid cost valuable positions and forced him onto the defensive during the opening laps.
Although Hamilton recovered well enough to overtake teammate Charles Leclerc and briefly stay within striking distance of race leader George Russell, he quickly realized Ferrari lacked the pace necessary to sustain that challenge.
According to Hamilton, tyre degradation proved to be the biggest obstacle.
Throughout each stint, the rear tyres deteriorated much faster than expected, making it increasingly difficult to maintain competitive lap times.
As grip disappeared, Ferrari’s pace dropped away compared with its closest rivals.
The veteran driver also described the SF-26 as an extremely challenging car to handle over a race distance.
Rather than offering predictable balance through every corner, the Ferrari frequently became unstable, making it difficult to consistently attack while preserving the tyres.
Hamilton noted that these issues were already evident during practice sessions on Friday, when Ferrari appeared noticeably slower than Mercedes and Red Bull in terms of straight-line performance.
Although engineers will spend the coming days examining data collected throughout the weekend, Hamilton admitted that the team still needs to understand exactly why its race pace failed to match expectations.
“There are things we still have to analyze,” he explained.
“We simply didn’t have enough grip to fight with the cars ahead.”
Even so, Hamilton was careful not to criticize Ferrari’s operational performance.
Instead, he praised the mechanics, strategists, and engineers for executing a clean race despite the car’s limitations.
He emphasized that the pit stops were efficient, strategic decisions were well managed, and every member of the team maximized the available package under difficult circumstances.
“Everyone did everything they could,” Hamilton said.
“We extracted the best possible result from the pace we had.”
While fifth place was clearly below Ferrari’s ambitions, Hamilton stressed that collecting valuable championship points remained important as the season continues.
Attention has already begun shifting toward future upgrades.
Hamilton acknowledged that Ferrari urgently needs improvements if it hopes to consistently challenge Mercedes, Red Bull, and McLaren over the remainder of the championship.
One of the biggest priorities, according to the Briton, involves the team’s power unit.
Rather than pointing to a simple horsepower deficit, Hamilton highlighted Ferrari’s energy deployment system as the primary weakness compared with its rivals.
He explained that the car loses electrical assistance too early along the longest straights, leaving drivers vulnerable during the final portion of high-speed acceleration zones.
Mercedes, by comparison, appears capable of sustaining electrical deployment for a considerably longer period, providing stronger acceleration and improved overtaking opportunities.
Hamilton believes understanding the reasons behind that difference will become a major focus for Ferrari’s technical department in the coming weeks.
“It’s not only about peak power,” he explained.
“The way we deploy energy isn’t matching what some of the other teams are able to do.”
That limitation became particularly noticeable throughout the Austrian Grand Prix, where several long straights reward strong hybrid deployment and efficient energy recovery systems.
Despite recognizing the problem, Hamilton admitted there is unlikely to be an immediate solution.
Developing meaningful power unit upgrades requires extensive engineering work, simulation, testing, and careful planning within Formula One’s strict technical regulations.
Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that Ferrari remains fully committed to improving the package as quickly as possible.
The team hopes its next round of upgrades will reduce the performance gap and allow both Hamilton and Leclerc to compete much closer to the front in the coming races.
Although the Austrian Grand Prix ended with another difficult afternoon for Ferrari, Hamilton’s spirited defense against Verstappen demonstrated that his racecraft remains as sharp as ever.
Even without the fastest machinery beneath him, the seven-time world champion once again proved willing to fight aggressively while staying within the boundaries of the regulations.
The stewards’ decision ultimately validated his approach, rejecting Verstappen’s request for a penalty and confirming that the battle had been fair.
For Hamilton, the result may not have delivered the podium he wanted, but it reinforced an important message: regardless of the competitiveness of the car, he remains ready to challenge Formula One’s biggest names whenever the opportunity arises.
With several upgrades expected later in the season, Ferrari will hope that determination can soon be matched by improved performance, giving Hamilton a genuine chance to fight consistently at the front once again.
